Air pollution in Choa Chu Kang Crescent Block 690-C

Reply from NEA dated 1st July 09

Dear Ms Anna

I refer to your feedback appended below.

In the wake of the recent malaria cases at the Sungei Kadut area , we are currently conducting regular thermal fogging of the implicated area.
The thermal fogging had to be done at night because the mosquitoes that carry the malaria parasites are active in the night.
As such it is the most optimum time to carry out the fogging. Nevertheless, please be assured that the chemicals used are not hazardous to humans.

Thank you for your understanding and it would be appreciated if you could convey this to your members.

Sincerely,

Dear Anna

Thank you for your feedback.
From our reords, we have not carry out any fogging or fumigation at the precinct and there are no works carry out by the Town Council which could emit smell of chemical.

We will by way of this email refer your feedback to the NEA for their attention and investigation.

Emailed from RC chairperson Anna Goh to Town council Mr Ang to support resident's complaint dated 26th June09

Dear Mr Ang,

Appreciate your assistance to check on below email from resident to MPS.

Our members have also provided feedback on the situation on Wednesday night.
I personally noted the thick hazy/foggy air on this night too while walking home from the carpark. The air was filled with smell ofinsectide/chemicals of some kind.

Will it be possible that you kindly check what was happening around our precinct that night, maybe some fumigation or fogging being carried out?
Appreciate your advice.

I attached here for your information two emails from our members:

A)Hi Anna,
This morning I wanted to check with my 3 colleagues who are staying in ourzone but forgotten. Last night about 10.45 to 11pm I looked out of the window and found thick haze or smoke and the smell was terrible! The wind was strong n it brew into my room. This was my 1st time that I encountered. The smell was like poison, burning something like chemical, etc. It was really terrible. I dare not open the window as I felt breathless.

Regards
Jennifer

B)Anna,
My feedback, YES, there are smell, burning diesel smell from forgging also in the night when the wind is strong, so controlling of pollution in the estate is important.
NEA should step up the checking.
Thank you very much Mr Ang.

Dear NEA Officer-in-charge, and MP Mr Yeo Cheow Tong

I live in Block 690-C Choa Chu Kang Crescent. And over the last few years living here, there have been smell of different kind which can be distinguished. But there has been a particular smell, akin to smell of chemical, or burning tires, or smoke from exhaust that has been a bother to me and my family as I don't know if this smell are some poisonous gas from nearby industrial estate.

This choking smell usually occurs in the night and lasted from 1/2 to couple of hours, and it causes nauseness if I step out of my house to try and breath it(trying to identify what it is). This smell is in the air now as I write to you.

I have written to NEA last year regarding this issue and was given with a replied that the smell came from engine of the KTM trains that pass through the estate.

Our neighbours can also smell the same choking smell. I hope NEA could send someone to investigate or interview our neighbours or put some instrument to detect the smell, to validate my report.

PLease do not hesitate to contact me if you need further clarification. I can be reached at my handphone 8XXXXXXX or home phone 6XXXXXXX , where my wife can give the same report.

Sincerely, Mr Hong LY
